Choose the option you actually need
Language subtitles translate dialogue. Captions may also identify speakers and important sounds. Audio description adds narration of visual information. A destination can offer one without offering all three, so inspect its menu for the exact edition rather than relying on a broad language tag.
When the words are out of time
First confirm the movie cut or television episode. Different recaps and opening sequences can shift a track. If your player allows a subtitle offset, a constant delay may be adjustable. A track that drifts progressively can belong to a different edition. Changing text size will not correct timing.
Make subtitles readable from your seat
Use size, background and outline controls where they are available. Test them against both a bright and dark scene. On a television, judge the result from normal viewing distance. On a phone, avoid covering faces with text that is unnecessarily large.
Check where the sound is going
A browser tab can be muted, headphones can remain connected, or a television can be set to an unavailable soundbar. Check the output before turning up every volume control. The original-language label here describes the production; the selected service determines which dubbed tracks and accessibility options you can play.
